    Hello Mike! I’m once again seeking for your mechanical wisdom 😂 I have done a full top end job on my 98 Electra. All stock motor, no performance upgrades. I have only ridden about 50 miles since. She seems to struggle at low RPM, not idling very smooth. And when I go to take off, she just feels empty? If that makes sense. What jet size would you recommend? I purchased a kit with multiple sizes. And I live down in Florida.

      Just go a little bigger on the low speed jet and see. You should also look at your intake closely to see if it's leaking. Pull the spark plugs. If one is dark and one is light, you have a vacuum leak, probably at the manifold. Check the lines at the carburetor and petcock. Also, check the ignition timing.

    What is your thoughts on solid lifters for a Shovelhead

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501 14 годин тому

      I prefer hydraulics in a Shovelhead. As it warms up, the topend grows, causing the clearanced to grow, then the lifters get real noisey. Well worth the money to buy quality hydraulic lifters for a Shovelhead.

    When prepping the lifter blocks I inspect the counterbores to assure that there are no flares or flash from the bottom of the counterbore seat into the hole caused by the head of SHCS (bolts) that might intefere with the alignmen tools (tapered shank). Simply match drilling from the back side witl a drill of the exact same size will correct this if needed. I have seen these holes with obstructions in both the steel and alum lifter blocks. Cheers to all.

      You got it. Install new head gaskets if you have to take the heads loose. Heat cycle the engine and retorque when you're done. Torque the heads down according to Harley or head gasket specs. Run it up to operating demp. Let it cool down completely, then retorque the heads. Do this three or four times. then put a few hundred miles on it. • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501 6 днів тому

      There is a motor sprocket on the left (output or drive) side of the motor. This is the primary drive when coupled (by chain) to the cutch, which is mounted as an assembly to the transmission mainshaft. The entire primary drive system is contained inside the primary housing on the left side of the motorcycle. Behind the primary housing is the transmission sprocket , which is attached to the rear wheel sprocket by chain. So, we have a primary drive and a final drive. Originally, this was all done with sprockets and chains. Today, we have the choice between chains and sprockets or belts and pulleys. Final drive ratios are changed by varying the numbers of teeth on the sprockets (both wheel and transmission.

      You're between a rock and a hard spot (couldn't help myself). I don't know which Dunlops you have, but most of the Dunlops like lots of pressure (40 or more). Otherwise, they wear out fast. We don't like beating those old rigid frames to death with hard tires (not to mention our bodies). I run old style tires on my rigids. I run them soft enough to not beat me to death and hard enough to not wear out my rtires too quickly. That's my best recommendations.

    I really enjoyed this series, Mike. As I mentioned in a comment some time ago, I wanted to install a mousetrap on my '72 FLH because, these old hands have been around the block a few times, and the idea of one-finger clutch is something I thought would be denied me because my bike was too new. Thanks to the suppliers you recommended, I've been slowly collecting the parts and now, I've seen a bike with the electric-start primary and newer style oil tank & battery box sitting on your stand with a mousetrap installed, so I know I can make it happen on mine. I was also having trouble finding a rear exhaust header that would fit around my kick starter, but those fellas with the mousetrap parts, they had that too. I picked-up a copy of the service manual you''re using as well. It's a shame all the manuals couldn't be as well put together as that one is. Thanks again for producing these videos. They're quite helpful, especially the little extras you do to make things better.

      No, but it is different. You will learn to tune well, so you can start it easily. 56 is a good Panhead. It has an 0-ring intake manifold that mounts better than a late shovel. It has Timken bearing lower end, which is just like your shovel. They're both loveable critters. They both have cheapo, poor hydraulic lifters that could be changed for better stuff. We could go on. They're just different. I would definitely put a belt primary hidden in the panhead tins. I would definitely install a 12volt electrical system in the Panhead. The Panhead is 25 years older.

    Such a nice setup. I love the sound of that release plate slamming into the clutch plates to lock it up.

    Torque rocker arm shaft locknut to 12 - 18 ft-lbs per the 1978 1/2 to 1984 service manual. The 70 - 77 manual (page 1-2B) specifies 15 ft-lbs for 'rocker arm housing nut' and contains a table for other hardware based on diameter and grade designation. I torque to 12 - 18 ft-lbs and use a SMALL amount of plumber's putty around the nut, which has been pretty effective for preventing weeping when driving across S. Dakota on I-90.

    Why would anyone change it over from a compensating sprocket to a solid sprocket? I know what compensating sprockets are, and kind of how they work, but to me they're "Harley Magic". My father said that it's for the differential force between the force the motor is supplying and the force that can be taken by the transmission/rear tire. He ACTUALLY said that 'it's for when you've got it tached way up doing a burnout, and the rear tire finally catches that it grabs at the compensator instead of on the body of the transmission or your bottom end/cases."

    i love those oil tanks, so easy to change the oil. when i first got my '71 over 30 years ago, the tank hadn't been cleaned out in a while so i douched it with gasoline to get it sparkling on the inside

    That Roger Ramjet retainer was the best upgrade for that dry clutch IMO. I do want to clarify some comments I made earlier about the booster clutch. I had one on my 58, never had a problem with it. Haven't worked on the old iron for a while so when you said mousetrap I heard foot clutch, hand shift. Went cross country with 3 other buddies running jap bikes in the late 60's to Idaho. I can remember adjusting my primary in the gravel and goatheads with a flashlight in my teeth while they sat around drinking beer and complaining what a tough day it was. I do take comfort in the knowledge that my bike was the last to break down. Needing a set of brushes in Red Lodge MT. 2 of the 3 had Harleys by the end of the year, not old ones like mine but new cone motors. Later.

      Harleys are highly addictive. Doubt we'll ever recover.
